Whitby Lions Boxing Day Dip

The Whitby District Lions Club hosts an annual Boxing Day Dip charity event where participants run into the North Sea. This year marks the club's 50th Boxing Day Dip, celebrating five decades of fundraising for local and national charities.

The event has grown from a handful of brave local citizens to over 300 eager individuals every year.

How to Get Tickets

  1. Online via Ticket Tailor
  2. In person at The Whitby Pet Shop, 15 Station Square, Whitby
  3. On the day at the registration tent

Registration is mandatory for insurance coverage. Participants must bring proof of ticket purchase.

Event Schedule

  • Registration opens: 10:00 AM
  • Fancy dress judging: 10:30 AM
  • Sea dip: Immediately after judging
  • Maximum water time: 15 minutes
  • Post-event: Free warm soup provided

Fancy Dress Competition

Prizes are awarded in five categories: Adult Female, Adult Male, Under 16 Female, Under 16 Male, and Team.

Safety Information

Participants must be medically and physically able and enter at their own risk. The Whitby Diving Club forms a safety perimeter in the water. Participants can either go up to their waist height or up to their shoulders in the water but must not be fully submerged. Blow-up and morph suit costumes are prohibited.

Children under 16 must take part alongside a paying adult and be accompanied by an adult throughout the event.

Facilities & Parking

  • No changing facilities available on site
  • Nearest toilets on Pier Road (paid public facilities)
  • Car parking at West Cliff or Marina/Endeavour Wharf (5–10 minute walk)

Spectators are welcome — best viewing from West Pier, Battery Parade, or around the Whale Bones.

Recent Results

The 2024 event drew 309 participants and raised £4,389.00 for the club through entry fees.
